Project Overview – Limestone Gravel Driveway in Blackburn

This project involved the full transformation of a tired, uneven driveway at a property in Blackburn, replacing the old asphalt and gravel surface with a fresh, durable double block paved driveway.

Before and After Comparison

Before:

  • Original driveway was made up of worn tarmac and patchy gravel with poor drainage and an untidy appearance.
  • One side was sunken and uneven, while the other lacked definition and structure.
  • The overall look was dated and didn’t complement the front of the property.

After:

  • The new double driveway provides a clean, professional finish.
  • It boosts the property’s kerb appeal.
  • Improved drainage, stable surfacing and low maintenance means it’s built to last.

Materials Used

  1. MOT Type 1 Crushed Limestone: For the sub-base layer
  2. Geo-textile Membrane: For weed control and drainage
  3. Block Pavers: Main surface
  4. Kiln-Dried Sand: Swept into the joints and compacted for stability

Construction Stages

  1. Site Clearance & Excavation:
    • Began by removing existing tarmac, gravel and any loose materials across both driveways.
    • All rubble, debris and excess soil were excavated and disposed of.
    • The area was dug to the required depth, ready for a new, stable foundation.
  2. Ground Preparation:
    • Sub-base was formed using MOT Type 1 crushed limestone, compacted in layers to create a firm and durable base.
    • A geo-textile membrane was installed to prevent weed growth and assist with drainage.
    • Levels were adjusted to allow for sufficient water runoff and seamless integration with existing paths and thresholds.
  3. Block Paving Installation:
    • Red block pavers were laid in a herringbone pattern to maximise strength and visual appeal.
    • A contrasting charcoal border was installed around the edges to frame the driveway neatly.
    • A custom charcoal square motif was added in the centre to provide a stylish focal point.
  4. Finishing Touches:
    • All edges were haunched with concrete for long term stability.
    • Kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints and compacted to lock the blocks in place.
    • The final result was a smart, maintenance double driveway with improved functionality and a modern aesthetic.

Conclusion

The completed driveway now offers excellent kerb appeal and practical parking for two vehicles. It’s low maintenance, weed resistant, and perfectly complements the style of the home. The bold edging and custom motif give it a standout finish, and the new levels ensure water runs off efficiently.
