Project Overview – Indian Sandstone Patio with Wooden Sleeper Beds and Brindle Paving
This project involved transforming a worn out, uneven driveway into a stylish and durable block paved driveway in Burnley. The old surface, which consisted of aged block paving and tarmac, had seen better days and was in need of a complete overhaul. By removing the existing driveway and preparing a strong foundation, we created a brand-new driveway featuring Marshall buff edging and a striking charcoal insert laid in an elegant herringbone pattern.
Before and After Comparison
Before:
- Original drivewaywas old and discoloured, showing significant signs of wear and tear.
- Uneven patches, drainage issues and lack of cohesive design.
- Overall look was dated, detracting from the home’s overall appearance.
After:
- Striking herringbone pattern used.
- Sleek and stylish finish with Marshall buff edging.
- Significantly improved surface, with a solid sub-base ensuring durability and longevity.
- Clean and modern aesthetic that enhances the property’s exterior.

Materials Used
- Charcoal Block Paving:
- Used as primary driveway surface, laid in a herringbone pattern.
- Marshall Buff Edging:
- Installed along the perimeter to frame the driveway.
- Drainage Channels:
- Installed where necessary to prevent water pooling and improve surface water runoff.
Construction Stages
- Excavation and Preparation:
- First step involved removing the old driveway.
- A mini digger was used to excavate the driveway to required depth.
- All debris was removed from the site for proper disposal.
- Ground Preparation and Base Installation:
- A geotextile membrane was laid to prevent weed growth and improve stability.
- A hardcore sub-base was installed and compacted in layers.
- Base provides a solid foundation to prevent movement or sinking over time.
- Edging Installation:
- Marshall buff edging blocks were laid along the perimeter of the driveway.
- These were secured on a concrete bed to provide a firm and defined edge, preventing blocks from shifting.
- Edging is essential to maintain the integrity of the block paving layout.
- Laying the Block Paving:
- Charcoal block paving was laid in a herringbone pattern, a design that enhances durability and visual appeal.
- The buff insert detailing was carefully arranged to create a striking decorative feature.
- Blocks were cut where necessary to fit the edges and maintain clean design.
- Compacting and Jointing:
- Once the blocks were laid, a vibrating plate compactor was used to settle them into place.
- Kiln-dried sand was then brushed into the joints, providing interlocking strength.
- A final compaction pass ensured the sand settled firmly, preventing future movement.
Finishing Touches
The driveway was checked for any uneven areas and adjustments were made if needed. The surface was cleaned, removing any excess sand and debris. Drainage channels were inspected to ensure efficient water runoff. The final result was a sleek, modern and structurally sound driveway.
Conclusion
This block paving transformation in Burnley is an exceptional example of how well-planned and professionally executed driveway installation can significantly improve a property’s look and practicality.
