Project Overview – Indian Sandstone Patio with Wooden Sleeper Beds and Brindle Paving
For this project in Todmorden, we transformed a tired and uneven outdoor space into a beautiful and practical patio area. The goal was to enhance the usability of the space while improving the overall aesthetics. We used high-quality Indian sandstone paving, complemented by brindle block paving edging and wooden sleeper raised beds to create a stunning and functional outdoor area.
Before and After Comparison
Before:
- The original space was cluttered and uneven, making it difficult to use.
- Existing paving was old and weathered, with signs of deterioration and moss growth.
- The garden layout was impractical, with no clear structure.
- Overgrown areas and an aging raised bed contributed to an untidy appearance.
After:
- Indian sandstone slabs were laid in a mixed-size pattern for a natural look.
- Brindle block paving edging was installed to create a defined border.
- Raised wooden sleeper beds were incorporated to provide a structured planting area.
- The patio was finished with a durable resin jointing compound, ensuring a long-lasting surface.
- Final result is a clean, stylish and functional outdoor space.
Materials Used
- Indian Sandstone Paving:
- High-quality, durable and weather resistant, providing a natural and elegant finish.
- Wooden Sleepers:
- Pressure-treated for longevity, used to create raised planting beds for a structured garden layout.
- Brindle Block Paving Edging:
- Adds contrast and definition to the patio, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal.
Construction Stages
- Excavation and Preparation:
- The old paving was removed, and the area was properly excavated to ensure a stable foundation. A hardcore sub-base was installed, followed by a layer of sharp sand for levelling.
- Indian Sandstone Paving:
- Premium Indian sandstone slabs were carefully laid in a mixed-size pattern, creating a natural and elegant look. The warm tones of the stone complement the property beautifully, providing a timeless finish.
- Brindle Paving Edging and Steps:
- To define the patio space, brindle paving was used as a neat bordr, adding contrast and a structured edge. New steps were also installed using the same materials, ensuring seamless access to the house.
- Wooden Sleeper Beds:
- Treated timber sleepers were installed to form raised flower beds along the perimeter of the patio. These not only add visual appeal but also provide a practical space for planting, enhancing the garden’s aesthetics.
- Finishing Touches:
- The entire area was cleaned and jointed with a weather-resistant resin compound, ensuring longevity and durability.
Final Outcome
The transformation has completely revitalised the outdoor area, creating a stylish and low-maintenance patio perfect for relaxation or entertaining. The combination of Indian sandstone, wooden sleeper beds, and brindle paving edges brings together natural and contemporary elements for a truly standout finish.

Not only does this transformation significantly improve the aesthetics of the property, but it also enhances usability, offering a low-maintenance and durable outdoor area perfect for relaxation and entertaining. With high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship, this patio is built to last and will be enjoyed for years to come.
